Asphalt pavement milling with asbestos

The pavement milling of asbestos-containing asphalt is a specialized and costly technique as all precautions related to the health of workers and citizens must be respected. Two distinct methods of cold milling are currently used. The first consists of adding a bituminous binder to the milling drum to minimize the emission of asbestos particles into the surrounding air. This material is then loaded into truck trailers and taken to a landfill site or it can be used as a granular base for new roads.

Alternatively, the asphalt is planed using a maximum amount of water and then the asbestos-containing material is loaded into truck trailers and covered with large bags for disposal in a landfill site.
